Making Ceramic Mugs

Mugs, especially ones made of ceramic are such a popular drinking vessel that virtually every house would have some. They are deemed very useful as a ceramic mug can hold many types of beverages, from hot to cold.

For thousands of years, clay has been utilized to make every possible kind of containers for food, drink, household amenities and many more. The sturdy compounds found in clay have made this material priceless to this day. Clay can be hardened by either using a kiln or letting it dry naturally under the hot sun.

As children have a love for working with clay, you can encourage their creative ideas by involving them into making ceramic mugs.

The process is easy and provides lots of fun with the family. Your children, nieces, and nephews will be proud of their creations once rendered.

To make ceramic mugs, you will need earthenware clay, a smooth hard plane, glaze which is safe for food containment, a kiln and wax as an added option.

On a smooth and hard surface, roll a portion of earthenware clay until you fashion a respectable coil. To ensure balance, ensure that the breadth of the clay coil is reliable all the way from top to end.

Carefully seize one end of the coil and swathe it around itself until you form an even circular coil. This coil serves as your mug’s base. Lightly pat the surface until the base is made smooth.

Roll out another portion of clay to make a similar coil, and place it on the outer border of the mug’s base, and start building vertically. Remember that the middle section must remain vacant. Use the coil to envelop the outer limits to fashion sides for the mug. Keep repeating this process until you get the dimensions desired.

The next step is to smooth the mug’s insides whilst combining all the coils. The act of blending will close up any visible cracks so your mug won’t leak any liquids. Repeat the same method for the exterior as well. When this is completed, turn the mug upside down and start to gently flatten the drinking edge.

To make the handle, roll out one thick and one small coil. Affix one end to the bottom of the mug and the other appended on top. Use your fingers and blend accordingly.

Set the mug in a warm and dry area. It will take a few days for the mug to harden and dry. The mug can then be fired in a kiln for about ten to fifteen hours. When this is done, remove mug from kiln and let cool for a day or two.

To ensure an even all over coat, glaze the mug carefully, repeating the process if necessary. After glazing, fire it again in the kiln for another ten hours.

The mug will be cool after twenty four hours. Now you can start decorating by using paints, glitter, or any other decorations. Isn’t this also a wonderful gift idea?
