The phenomenon of the Keurig brewing system and their K Cups has taken America by storm. Nearly all noteworthy coffee producers are producing K Cups for Keurig, and Folgers is no exception. Significantly, however, Folgers K Cups are different from the regular run of Folgers coffees. While most coffee producers are offering the same favors that have put them on the coffee map, Folgers has ventured into this new system with bold new flavors.
Folgers has always been known for a predictable, if not particularly adventurous, cup of coffee. They have been hugely successful with this approach and since the 1950s have been one of the top selling brands of coffee in America and the world. Their name and the Folgers jingle, “The Best Part of Waking Up,” are familiar to just about everyone. So, what have Folgers K Cups done to depart from their tried-and-true formula? In making products for the Keurig system, Folgers decided to go experimental and produce some flavors they don’t offer in any other way, while still keeping some familiarity to the sound and look of the new packaging and flavors.
So, when you buy Folgers K Cups, you are not getting the same old traditional Folgers coffee. This is appropriate for the Keurig brewers, which are pretty revolutionary in themselves. In case you haven’t seen one, it is a coffee maker that produces one cup at a time from little packaged portions of coffee, called K Cups, that are single-use, disposable, no-muss (no muss?, I was told that meant no mess and no fuss all in one!), containers that can be any flavor or style of coffee, tea, or cocoa. So, if you want coffee and your mate wants tea, you can have both in about three minutes.
Folgers K Cups come in five flavors at this writing. The Lively Columbian and Lively Columbian Decaf are the more traditional Folgers offerings, but significantly better than regular run-of-the-mill Folgers from a big red can. For a real departure, try Folgers Black Silk, Caramel Drizzle, or Vanilla Biscotti. Wow! This is not your grandfather’s Folgers!
Folgers entered this market because Keurig is really making waves in the coffee maker industry. I read recently that 6% of all the coffee brewed in America is now done in Keurig machines. That is a huge piece of the market in a coffee consuming nation such as ours. As mentioned previously, many major brands are finding this a great way to experiment with flavors and get new offerings out in front of their customers. Who is producing K Cups? Besides older firms such as Folgers, trendier companies like Newman’s Own, Tully’s, Diedrich, and Green Mountain have varieties you can try. Add to that you will find the gourmet market represented by Emeril, Van Houtte, and Wolfgang Puck, among others, producing flavors for you next to Coffee People, Timothy’s, Millstone, Gloria Jean’s, and Dunkin’ Donuts.
For tea, Twinings of London, Celestial Seasonings, and Bigelow are a few of the K Cup packagers. Hot chocolate, cocoa, and chai are also on the list of over 200 varieties offered in all. There is even an option for making your own K Cups with re-useable brewing capsules to cut down on the land-fill factor associated with single-use disposable packaging. However you do it, whether you use Folgers K Cups or Wolfgang Puck’s, you should try the Keurig system for its ease of use, no clean up brewing, and huge variety to spice up your coffee drinking pleasure.
