Can I decorate a ceramic Coffee mug so it is microwave and hand wash safe?

I bought my boyfriend a plain black coffee mug. Its a little boring and I want to decorate it to make it special for Christmas. Are there any paints or something of the sort that I can use to add decoration and personalization to the cup, so he can still use it?
